Laminate durability is measured using an AC Rating (Abrasion Criteria rating) — not mil thickness.

“Is AC4 better than 20 mil?”
The problem is that those numbers are measuring completely different things. A mil measurement on LVP tells you the thickness of the vinyl wear layer. An AC rating on laminate tells you how the entire surface system performs under standardized testing. There is no direct conversion chart. You cannot say 20 mil equals AC4 — because they’re not measuring the same type of protection.
That’s why comparing them directly creates confusion.
Performance: What Actually Matters?
Instead of trying to compare mil thickness to AC ratings, it’s more helpful to look at how each product performs in real-life situations.
Scratch Resistance
Laminate often performs extremely well in scratch resistance because of its aluminum oxide surface layer. LVP resists scratches too, but performance depends heavily on wear layer thickness and overall product quality.
Water Resistance
Most LVP products are fully waterproof. Many modern laminates are now water-resistant or waterproof as well, but their core construction differs.
Impact Resistance
Laminate’s dense core can resist dents well, though it can chip if heavily impacted. LVP is more flexible and may dent under heavy point loads but won’t chip the same way laminate might.
