Carpet
Advances in carpet technology have given consumers more options with better
quality and lower prices. Today's carpets are more stain and wear resistant also
softer than those of what maybe in your house now.
Considerations:
The first thing you should consider is weather you need a
carpet that can handle wear better, or a carpet that can
handle stains better. The fiber is what mostly determines
what will meet your needs. Nylon is the strongest and most
popular carpet fiber in the United States. Nylon is very
resistant to wear, and has the ability to be died easily with
many colors. Polyester is inherently stain resistant and
cleans easily. Polyester is also very soft in cut pile textures,
and is noted for color clarity. Olefin or polypropylene is a
strong resilient fiber that resist wear and stains, also the
fiber is easy to clean and keeps its color. Olefin is often used
in indoor/ outdoor carpet because of its resistance to mold
and mildew, many Berbers are olefin. The newest thing in
the carpet world is the "corn polymer" carpets (actually made
from corn) that are the most stain resistant of all carpet
fibers. The next thing you may consider is the type of carpet:
Cut Pile: One of the most popular carpet constructions. The
durability depends on the fiber, the density of tufts, and the
amount of twists.
Level Loop Pile: Loops are the same height. This type holds
up well in high traffic areas. Many Berbers are level loops.
Multi-Level Loop Pile: Loops are of different heights to
create a pattern. Still good for durability and is fashionable.
Cut-Loop Pile: Has both cut pile and looped to show a
stylish variety of textures. Multi-colored hides stains.
Care and Maintenance:
Vacuuming is number one. In non-traffic areas vacuum at least
once a week, using three passes of the vacuum. Light-traffic areas
vacuum at least twice weekly. Moderate to heavy traffic areas
require more thorough cleaning -at least five passes, two to five
times per week. Do heavy vacuuming more slowly to allow the
beating or suction action of your cleaner to remove embedded
particles. Have your carpet professionally cleaned every 12 to 24
months, depending on traffic and frequency of vacuum also
whether the carpet is a light or dark color. Removing shoes before
walking on carpet is highly recommended, the sandy soil found in
Florida can  get into your carpet and is hard to vacuum out. A
particle of sand has many cutting edges which is the main cause
for the showing of wear.
